Andrew Clay Silverstein started practicing comedy at age twenty. He didn't know anyone in the business, but he worked hard every night to sharpen what can only be described as an impossibly crass, racist, misogynist attache of gags under the guise of his stage presence, a character affectionately referred to as Diceman. While other comedians were out postulating whether or not you might be redneck, Diceman had already begun dumbing it down a notch.

Clay recorded his most successful example of "Dice" as performance art. The two CD set The Day the Laughter Died, lasting just under two hours, hit the Top 40 Album Chart. The album's comedy broke from traditional stand-up performance, and consisted mostly of audience-baiting, and deliberately unfunny and scatological musings on life.

What Mr. Clay should have done, then, was to reject criticism of his art as elitist, racist and sexist - he is the embattled spokesman of a persecuted minority with no other public voice: white trash. Not only (following Mr. Brenson's reasoning) is his comedy a legitimate expression of his cultural identity, but it is ... conceptual art of a high order.
