Andre De Toth: Wax Museum
built 237 days ago
The sweet dread and sheer fun of this creepy classic, co-starring Phyllis Kirk, Carolyn Jones and Charles Bronson and directed by Andre de Toth, had its roots in a Warner Bros. chiller from 20 years before: Mystery of the Wax Museum, starring Lionel Atwill as the wax-wielding madman and Fay Wray as a potential victim. Directed by Michael Curtiz and shot in a chillingly effective early two-color Technicolor process, it and its spooky remake offer you a delicious double-dip in a paraffin bath of terror.

Based on the André De Toth film of the same name, House of Wax features an intriguing premise - a madman encases his still-breathing victims in wax - but exceedingly little in the way of character development and plot. In terms of the latter, screenwriters Carey and Chad Hayes don't even attempt to disguise the fact that House of Wax is essentially not about anything; the film is generally dominated by long, unnecessarily prolonged sequences in which the various characters are either poking around where they shouldn't or hiding from a deformed maniac.

A sudden visit in the night... HORROR-WOOD: In 1953, you landed a major supporting role in AndrĂ© De Toth’s House Of Wax, with Vincent Price. During its production, did you sense that this would be the film for which you would be best remembered?
