Since 1989 when Michael Chang, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi dominated on clay, American tennis players have struggled on the surface. No American man or woman has won a tournament on clay in 2007; last year Americans claimed only two minor titles.

Agassi had a poor start to 2006. He was still recovering from an ankle injury and ... suffering from back and leg pain and lack of match play. Agassi withdrew from the Australian Open because of the ankle injury, and his back injury and other pains forced him to withdraw from several other events, eventually skipping the entire clay court season, including the French Open. This caused his ranking to drop out of the top 10 for the last time.

Agassi got a cortisone injection after beating Andre Pavel in 31/2 hours, then received three anti-inflammatory shots in the days after beating eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis in an even longer encounter. The last injection came Sunday, before facing Becker, a German who won the 2004 NCAA singles title for Baylor University but is so unaccomplished he needed to go through qualifying just to make it into the Open.

After a depressing career slump in 1997, the once rebellious Agassi got serious and rededicated himself to the game. He trained hard and made an impressive comeback. In 1999, he won the French Open and the U.S. Open. He continued his winning ways at the Australian Open in 2000, 2001, and 2003. Admired by fans and competitors alike, Agassi retired on September 4, 2006, after his last match at the U.S. Open, which he lost to Benjamin Becker. At the end of the match, Agassi said an emotional good-bye to the game and to the roughly 23,000 people who had packed the stadium to see him play for the last time.

Even while distinguishing himself as a globe-hopping tennis star, Andre Agassi never strayed from his Las Vegas roots. His love of the city goes beyond the glittering Strip to the gritty, less visible neighborhoods.
