The principality of Andorra is a small mountainous country nestled between northern Spain and southern France. Andorra's capital city, Andorra la Vella, is a tax free, duty free shopping Mecca. Skiers who visit this out of the way country get a double bonus—skiing and shopping bargains. Although small and most certainly tucked away, Andorra has a literacy rate of 100% with many of its citizens fluent in four languages: the national language of Catalan, Spanish, French and distantly fourth, English.

In Andorra La Vella there is the famous Caldea to visit which is a spa / swimming pool complex. This is very popular. It is located up the top end of La Vella and you cannot miss it because it is the large glass spire structure which is quite an attraction on the skyline itself.

In the Les Escaldes suburb east of Andorra la Vella, Caldea has an large complex of pools, hot tubs and saunas in something that resembles a cathedral of sorts. The spa complex is fed by natural thermal springs with the over 6000 square foot lagoon kept at a constant 89°F. This is a very popular place to end a day of skiing. Visitors can ... find their own serenity with a hydro massage or a dip in the Turkish baths. Admission is by a ticket that is good for three hours of relaxation. Tickets are available at tourist offices.

Andorra has two ski resorts which are easily reached by the public ski bus network connecting “Andorra la Vella”, the capital with the ski areas. In a territory of only 468sq. Km, Andorra has 2 ski resorts with 282 km of slopes.

Most of the people of Andorra live in seven small towns. The capital and largest town is Andorra la Vella, with a population of 22,035. Located on the Valira River in west central Andorra, the town is a center for the retail trade in duty-free goods. Other sizable towns include Escaldes-Engordany, Encamp, Saint Julià de Lòria, and La Massana. The overall population density of Andorra is 159 persons per sq km (413 per sq mi).

Until 1978, Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella formed a single Parish. The commercial centre of the Principality is a single road which bears two names: Avinguda Meritxell in Andorra la Vella and Avinguda Carlemany in the part located in Escaldes-Engordany.
