Ancient Philosophy: Works
built 627 days ago
Kingsley's new book, Ancient Philosophy, Mystery, and Magic, continues his exploration of this fertile terrain, with emphasis on Empedocles and the Pythagorean tradition. And in this work, Kingsley has brought a vast amount of scholarship to bear on the subject an amount that can seem, at times, almost overwhelming.

The English historians of ancient philosophy are not so numerous as the Germans. The work of Enfield is based on Brucker, or is rather an abridgment. Archer Butler's Lectures are suggestive and able, but discursive and vague. Grote has written learnedly on Socrates and the other great lights. Lewes's Biographical History of Philosophy has the merit of clearness, and is very interesting, but rather superficial. See ... Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy, and the articles in Smith's Dictionary on the leading ancient philosophers.
Heike Sefrin-Weis (PhD Pittsburgh, Assistant Professor, Philosophy and Classics) works primarily on ancient philosophy and ancient science. She is particularly interested in Aristotle's metaphysics and science, in ancient mathematics, in ancient positions on the meaning, the methodology, and the meta-theory of science, and in the transmission and reception of all of these in the ancient world and in the early modern period.

There's also titles on ancient eastern philosophy like a number of lectures on the Tao and Buddhist thought given by Alan Watts. You'll also find ancient thought put in a modern context in "Confucius in the Boardroom: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Lessons for Business".
The Circle is a group of individuals who share an interest in ancient Greek philosophy.  The nature of philosophy as it was practiced and lived in ancient Greece allows for a multitude of topics to be discussed.  Everything from the origins of modern notions and disciplines and the problems that the great philosophers faced (many of which we still face today), to the way that Greek culture at the time influenced and interacted with philosophical works is fair game at our meetings.
