Ancient Philosophy: Program
built 652 days ago
The PhD in Ancient Philosophy is a comprehensive doctoral program. Students can complete the program in six terms or less. (A term is four months.) Depending upon exemptions, performance and the workload, it may take more or less time. Students should regard six terms as the average length of the program. Students may shorten that timetable by arranging for high-intensity customised research projects.

This year the Ancient Philosophy Society received over 100 submissions for its Spring 2008 annual meeting at the New School in New York City. While the Society is very impressed by the overall quality of these submissions, the record number of submissions poses specific problems for a program that can only accept a very limited number of submissions each year.
The graduate program in Ancient Philosophy is suitable for students who intend to develop professional careers in a wide range of settings. The rigorous intellectual training that philosophy provides has value and appeal to employers in areas such as: teaching (most likely at the college level), course development and curricula design, research, civil service, local government, charities, information technology, solicitor’s firms, publishing, journalism, and so forth.

Every term, the Program in Ancient Philosophy brings a speaker to campus for a visit of around three days. Usually, the speaker presents two papers, and is available to speak with interested students and faculty. Visiting speakers in recent years have included Rachel Barney, Susanne Bobzien, Sarah Broadie, David Charles, Alan Code, John Cooper, Brad Inwood, Rachana Kamtekar, Richard Kraut, Dominic Scott, and Gisela Striker.
Teaching and research in any area of ancient philosophy require familiarity with certain core texts and problems. The Reading List, which reflects these needs, comprises major texts from the Presocratics and Plato to Aristotle and Sextus Empiricus. It should be a major focus of your study during your three years of coursework. Some of this work will be covered in seminars and other courses, but much of it you must study independently. The Reading List is ... the basis for a translation examination which members of the Joint Program must pass before advancing to candidacy.
