Ancient Persia: Studies

Shadows in the Desert: Ancient Persia at War (General Military): Ancient Persia at War Of all the great civilizations of the ancient world, that of Persia is one of the most remarkable but least understood. This is a study of the country's origins and why it collapsed so dramatically with the Arab invasions of the seventh century. Josef Wiesehofer, provides a comprehensive survey of the Persian Empire under the Achaeminids, the Parthians and the Sassanians. By focusing on the primary Persian sources - written, archaeological and numismatic evidence from Persia - he avoids the traditional Western approach which has tended to rely so heavily on inaccurate, and sometimes prejudiced, Greek and Roman sources.

Unlike many ancient civilizations, such as Greece, Rome or Egypt, Persia has hardly been given significant attention in Hollywood. This is mainly due to lack of significant feedback and study on Persian civilization which has never quite penetrated Western popular culture. Only an elite group of Western scholars ponder on the "mysterious" Persian Empire.

stone tablet depicting a persian king The Course: The aim of the course is to explore the world of the ancient Persian empires from 650BC to 650AD. This includes the struggle of Persian kings like Darius and Xerxes against the Greeks and of later empires in their battles with the Roman armies. The course will include a study of the Zoroastrian religion within the Persian state. Slides and video will seek to bring alive this neglected civilisation.
