athena Voices and Choices: Democracy in Ancient Greece is part of a three-unit series exploring the role of civics and active citizenship in a democracy. The units are designed to complement sixth, seventh, and eighth grade middle school curricula in Social Studies. The sixth grade unit, Democracy in Ancient Greece, focuses on democracy and citizenship within the context of the western world’s first democracy in ancient Athens. The seventh grade unit, Constitution Today, focuses on current issues of public debate relating to the Constitution of the United States. The eighth grade unit, The Evolution of Civil Rights, focuses on the expansion of civil rights and democracy throughout US history.
Like all early civilisations Ancient Greece was an agricultural society. Most of the people lived by farming and the main form of wealth was owning land. In each city there was an upper class and a middle class of men like substantial farmers, doctors and teachers. However the vast majority of people were peasants and craftsmen or slaves. Slavery was common. (It is estimated that about 30% of the population of Athens was made up of slaves).
Ancient Greece, as with Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt, played an important part in medical history. The most famous of all Ancient Greek doctors was Hippocrates. By 1200 B.C., Ancient Greece was developing in all areas - trade, farming, warfare, sailing, craftsmanship etc. Their knowledge of medicine developed accordingly.
Voices and Choices: Democracy in Ancient Greece introduces middles school students to civic responsibility through an exploration of life in ancient Greece, the role of democracy in the Athenian Assembly, and important issues debated by the Athenian people. Technology is skillfully used to motivate and inform students and teachers alike.
Ancient Greece is considered the birthplace of European civilization, dating back over 5000 years. Many of the ancient ruins date back over 4000 years, with some caves showing signs of life over 10,000 years ago. The ancient greek people may have come from northern Africa.
