The Navajo claim much of the Anasazi lands and some of that occupied by the Fremont Indians. A series of treaties imposed upon the Hopi and Navajo by the Federal Government has placed the Hopi Reservation in the middle of the Navajo Reservation. The Government's wisdom has contributed to a territorial dispute between the Hopi and Navajo that is rooted in more than five hundred years of cultural history.

The Anasazi Indians were real pioneers and created roads and irrigation systems for watering their crops. They were ... great architects and the cliff dwellings are one of their biggest achievements. Not only that but they were diligent and persevering. The reason why? The wood used in many of the cliff dwellings did not come from the immediate area. Rather, the wood came from the forests over fifty miles away.

Eventually, the Anasazi Indians left the cliff dwellings. The reason why has never been proven, but there is much speculation that the Anasazi left due to a shortened crop growing season, it was getting too hard to survive in a climate that was not yielding enough food. Others say that it was because their “security” was threatened. This too, has never been proven and is just speculation. No matter what the reason was, the Anasazi Indians have remained the center of Native American research.
