Anachronox ("uh-NAK-ruh-nox") is a 3rd person, 3D role-playing game (RPG) using the heavily-modified Quake 2 engine (32-bit graphics, particle system, spline-based camera scriptor, APE programming language). The player controls up to three characters at a time, from an eventual cast of seven, exploring the galaxy. Gameplay is exploration and interaction of the environment, melee with various galactic foes, and discovery of unique weapons and items that aid you on your quest. You can choose different characters to play and different ways to do things, leading you to different events and areas in the game. Each character has different Battle Skills with unique effects, and World Skills they can use to access places and info the other characters can't. For instance, one character can talk to computers, another can "Yammer" people, annoying them so much by blathering on that they provide the info you need!

Anachronox is a console-style Role Playing Game that brings Final Fantasy-style play to the PC in a science fiction setting. Players take on the role of Sylvester "Sly" Boots, a private detective who works out of the back of a sleazy bar. No longer the bright-eyed success of his early career, Boots allowed his debts to overwhelm him as work was increasingly beneath him. Fortunately, two purchases remain: a multipurpose robot (the Personal Android Lackey), and a Cordicom LifeCursor. The LifeCursor contains the digitized personality of Fatima Dohan, Boots' old secretary. When she died, Boots paid to have her personality digitized and installed into a floating arrow, damning Fatima to an afterlife of managing the Anachronox interface.

Anachronox ... has a nasty habit of crashing when loading from area to area. The game auto-saves after loading a new territory, so it isn't too devastating to have to reboot the game, just annoying. The load times for these areas are only 10-15 seconds, but it adds up when running back and forth so often. Again, expect the game to soak up a large chunk of your time; it is most sobering to notice the time elapsed display in the menu change from merely hours to days and hours.

Anachronox has a simple player interface, which doesn’t take very long to learn to control. The game has three difficulty settings – really easy, normal and way too hard – to accommodate most players and their respective skill levels.

[S]o, the tale of Anachronox begins. Together with his friends, Sly Boots will discover a great mystery and prevent the destruction of the universe. Set in a futuristic world, the game is a console-style RPG for the PC, that ... contains elements of a humorous adventure รก la Space Quest. Controlling Sly and six other party members, you'll explore many planets, and fight enemies in Final Fantasy style battles - a mixture of real time and turn-based combat. There are also many mini-games and plenty of side quests scattered around.

The heart of any good RPG revolves around the storyline and characters, and on this level, Anachronox delivers. The storyline is a larger-than-life tale that draws you in -- after all, who isn't ready to save the universe, discover new powers, and possibly find true love? All the elements of a great legend are present, including a worthy cast of principal characters. Sly Boots is accompanied by his pal robot, an ex-partner/love interest, a superhero, a scientist, a planet (with the ability to shrink or grow), and a grumpy Mysteria expert.
