Outside of Tiger Woods, Alcott may be the most successful golfer to grow up playing Southern California’s public courses. As a young girl in Santa Monica, Alcott fell in love with golf but didn’t belong to a club, which made practicing and playing more difficult.

Amy Alcott, 24, of Santa Monica, California, won the 1980 Championship at the Richland Country Club, Nashville, Tennessee, setting the 72-hole scoring record with 280. The previous record, of 284, was set in 1979 by Jerilyn Britz.

Alcott didn't even have proper professional junior golf clubs � but practiced with sawn off golf clubs and soup cans. One of three children growing up in Santa Monica , swinging these golf clubs was her way out of loneliness.
