Amy Acker was born Amy Louise Acker on December 5, 1976 in Dallas Texas and is the eldest among four siblings. Acker started out as a dancer and excelled in ballet, jazz and modern dance but had to give it all up following knee surgery in high school. She switched her creative pursuits to acting when she attended the Southern Methodist University from 1996-1999. She became a J. Crew model for their 1998 spring catalogue in her junior year and ... modeled in Japan in three previous summers. After graduating with a BFA in Acting, Acker became part of the American Players Theatre in Wisconsin before moving to New York to appear in the movies The Accident and The Energy Specialist. She then proceeded to Los Angeles where she soon got cast in the role of Winifred “Fred” Burkle on Angel.

Amy's father is a lawyer in Dallas and her mother is a full time mom. Growing up Amy wanted to be a ballerina. She studied ballet, modern and jazz dancing for 13 years.

Amy Acker, who appeared in three episodes of Angel last season as a girl trapped in another dimension, joins the cast as a series regular this fall for the show's third season. Born and raised in Dallas, this Texas native studied ballet, modern and jazz dancing for 13 years before heading to Southern Methodist University to study fine arts. While in college, Acker discovered a love for acting and enrolled in theater classes, ultimately graduating with a B.F.A. Soon, she landed a pilot for MTV and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream. While the pilot didn't go to series, Acker next appeared in several independent films, most notably Groom Lake, written and directed by William Shatner. After a reading for Angel, she nailed the recurring role of Fred.
