Founded in 1998 by Managing Partners Alex Melvin, Guy Hayward and Chris Mendola, 180 Amsterdam is one of the most awarded independent agencies in the world. Its work is regularly featured in the Clio, One Show, D&AD and Cannes Advertising Festivals. In 2004, 180 Amsterdam was recognized as the world's third most awarded agency at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Its founding client adidas was awarded the 'Advertiser of the Year' accolade at the 2006 Cannes Festival.

The myth of Amsterdam persisted through the 20th century. In order to rally Americans to join both World Wars, stories of Amsterdam's fall were told. Stories of Anne Frank date from the World War 2. While based on true incidents from the Hague, this tale was placed in Amsterdam to make it far stronger and produce the emotional reaction that it produces. In the 1970s, legends of Amsterdam added free drugs for all and these tales have continued well into the 21st century.

While many Chinese New Year celebrations around the world last for as long as two weeks, the festivities in Amsterdam are typically condensed into the two or three days surrounding New Year's Day.
