Amsterdam: Amsterdam Central Station
built 277 days ago
Amsterdam makes an impression with its canals, bridges, row houses and monuments. Along with the trams, bicycles, and thousands of people walking down the Damrak, you will be lead along this main street from the Central Station into its commercial heart. Apart from the diversity of restaurants, shops, people, and products, and the constant activity that first envelopes you, you will notice a familiar feeling as the city welcomes you into its fold.

Catholic churches in Amsterdam have been constructed since the restoration of the bishopric hierarchy in 1853. One of the principal architects behind the city's Catholic churches, Cuypers, was ... responsible for the Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum, which led to a refusal of Protestant King William III to open 'that monastery'. In 1924 the Roman Catholic Church of the Netherlands hosted the International Eucharistic Congress in Amsterdam, and numerous Catholic prelates visited the city, where numerous festivities were held in churches and stadiums; Catholic processions on the public streets however were still forbidden under law at the time. Only in the twentieth century was Amsterdam's relation to Catholicism normalised, but despite its far larger population size, the Catholic clergy chose to place its bishopric seat of the city in the nearby provincial town of Haarlem.
