Amnesia

Amnesia is one of several internationally renowned clubs in Ibiza and was awarded Best Global Club in the 2007 International Dance Music Awards for 2006 at the Winter Music Conference in Miami[1]. The club is located close to the village of San Rafael on the highway between Sant Antoni de Portmany and Ibiza Town and less than a kilometer apart from Privilege, both among the island's most popular nightclubs. The club can pack more than 5,000 people on the dance floors. Amnesia was the first major outdoor club on the island. Today the previously open-air terrace is closed, but light still floods in as sunrise approaches. Like Privilege, is famous for its sunrise dance floor.

Amnesia is a symptom of other medical and mental disorders; ... the patterns of amnesia are different, depending on the cause of the disorder. Amnesia associated with head trauma is typically both retrograde (the patient has no memory of events shortly before the head injury) and anterograde (the patient has no memory of events after the injury). The amnesia that is associated with seizure disorders is sudden onset. Amnesia in patients suffering from delirium or dementia occurs in the context of extensive disturbances of the patient's cognition (knowing), speech, perceptions, emotions, and behaviors. Amnesia associated with substance abuse, which is sometimes called "blackouts" typically affects only short-term memory and is irreversible. In dissociative amnesia, in contrast to these other conditions, the patient's memory loss is almost always anterograde, which means that it is limited to the period following the traumatic event(s).

Amnesia has several root causes. Most are traceable to brain injury related to physical trauma, disease, infection, drug and alcohol abuse, or reduced blood flow to the brain. In Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, for example, damage tothe memory centers of the brain results from the use of alcohol or malnutrition. Infections that damage brain tissue, including encephalitis and herpes, can ... cause amnesia. If the amnesia is thought to be of psychological origin, it is termed psychogenic. There are at least three general types of amnesia.

As with all decent rock 'n' roll bands, Amnesia ... had band fights. In the winter of 2001/2002 Trond lost interest and ceased to enjoy playing the drums. He brought Amnesia an unnatural long life. For one and a half years he played the drums, and in the gloom of Amnesia's rehearsal room he waited. Darkness crept back into the rock 'n' roll workshop. Rumour grew of a new drummer, whispers of a nameless drum machine, and Trond perceived that his time had now come.

The history of Amnesia really begins in April 1970, when the Planells family who had inhabited the house for five generations decided to move in to town and sell their ‘finca’ (country house) to a widow from an aristocratic background. Ibiza, which had become a destination for tourism already in the fifties, was at that time a hive for counterculture and idealists and the building that was to become Amnesia turned into a meeting point with hippie bands playing and other facets of hippie culture taking place. In May 1976, Antonio Escohotado, a young man born in Madrid and with a degree in philosophy, who had arrived on the island two years earlier to start a new life, signed a lease with the landlady for use of the premises and he decides a name for the discotheque he is going to establish: "The Workshop of Forgetfulness". He wanted to express that when people go out at night it is to forget their problems and indulge in an unknown world far away from ordinary routine. However, already the next day he realizes that the Greek word Amnesia contains it all. Two years later, in 1978, Ginés Sánche, a manufacturer from Madrid takes over Amnesia and a decade filled with ups and downs begins. Unexpected closings alternate with wonderful summers with capacity crowds in active competition with the other discotheques, such as Ku (now Privilege), Pacha, Glory’s and Lola’s (the last two have long since closed).

Amnesia kept practicing and made tons of new songs, and in late winter 2001 they played another show, which was up until then their biggest show. It was a competition with bands from the entire region. Amnesia ... was knocked out. It was a great performance, but Magne was sick, and no step-in was to be found. So they played the show without keyboards, which are pretty important to Amnesia's sound. Amnesia played two songs at this show and one of them was “Lost.”
