After 20 years of scaring the bejesus out of people, the Amityville Horror is still one of the most exciting topics in everyday life. You hear people talking about it all over the globe. In restaurants, at the club, and even at the dinner table. The Terror that is at 112 Ocean Avenue still looms in everyone's minds and millions make the pilgrimage every year to see this house of horror. You might hear people saying that the house is not terrorizing the current residents but little do you know that they are in their own personal hell! That house is the most terrifying house in history.
Get out! Origins: Some horrors just won't die, and The Amityville Horror is a case in point. The tale of a reportedly demon-infested house in Amityville, New York, became a best-selling novel in 1977 and a hit horror film starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder in 1979. Several inferior movie sequels followed in its wake (including a 3-D version), and 15 April 2005 saw the debut of a remake, this one starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George.

Besides lacking much tension, "The Amityville Horror" ultimately destroys itself by over-literalizing its haunted plot. While the original flick relied on creepy psychological scares to weave its human tale, this new incantation feels the need to go the way of all other 21st-century supernatural films, frequently showing every ghostly manifestation it possibly can. Why bother ratcheting up suspense with unseen forces and horrors of the psyche, director Andrew Douglas decides, when he can show you what never appears to be anything but actors in makeup instructed to look spooooooky? And instead of embracing the unknown, which often makes for a more ominous atmosphere, screenwriter Scott Kosar has ... felt the need to overexplain the haunted history of the house. It's all terribly ham-fisted, coming off as a rip-off of a lot of better movies that did the same thing with more flair when it still felt like a novelty.

Flash: Looking back on the Amityville Horror Put "The Shining," "In Cold Blood" and shards of "The Exorcist" into a compactor and "The Amityville Horror" is what comes out. No wonder everybody loved to be scared by this maybe-true-maybe-not haunted house story when it was first disgorged on movie screens back in 1979.

Jay Anson (1921-1980), the author of The Amityville Horror The 2005 film version of The Amityville Horror exaggerates the isolation of 112 Ocean Avenue by depicting it as a remote house similar to the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's The Shining. In reality, 112 Ocean Avenue was a suburban house within 50 feet of other houses in the neighborhood.
