Amitabh Bachchan is the older of the two sons born to Teji Bachchan and Harivansh Rai Bachchan , the acclaimed Hindi poet. He was born In Allahabad. He was educated at Sherwood College, a boarding school in Nainital, from where he moved to Delhi University for his Arts degree. His first film `Saat Hindustani sank without a trace. He was introduced to Success by `Zanjeer, and he was instantly accepted (and adored) in the role of the `Angry Young Man -- an image that became his calling card. `Deewar followed and further reinforced it. He became the hero who filled peoples hearts with hope.

A freak accident on the sets of the movie Coolie had millions of his fans worried and praying for his life. Amitabh Bachchan is all set to play the role of an old married man who falls in love with a 18-year-old girl. To be directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Nishabd, will be released in September this year. Ram Gopal Varma has completed the shooting of the film in 20 days. Although rumours have been doing the rounds that Nishabd is yet another adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, Ram Gopal Varma has denied this very firmly. He insists that Nishabd is an original story conceived and written by him. He calls its an intense love story between an older man and a younger girl.

In November 2005, Amitabh Bachchan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital's ICU once more, to undergo surgery for diverticulitis of the small intestine.[33] This occurred after Bachchan complained of pains in his abdomen some days prior. During the period and that following his recovery, most of his projects were put on hold, including the television show he was in the process of hosting, Kaun Banega Crorepati. India ... appeared to come to a standstill, with celebrity after celebrity visiting him to offer well-wishes and prayers.
