Amitabh Bachchan: Life
built 614 days ago
Like a hologram the legend of Amitabh Bachchan hovers over the flesh and blood Bachchan. And as the hologram, sometimes mocking, sometimes cajoling, gets bigger -- even more ominous with its intimations of immortality -- the man himself on today's stage of screen and life shrinks.

Amitabh matched the acting skills of another great actor in Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Shakti’ (1982). The son of a strict police officer (Dilip Kumar), he takes to the life of high crime and smuggling. It was a big challenge for Amitabh the actor, and he came out with flying colors.

The director, Manmohan Desai altered the ending for Coolie after Bachchan's accident. Bachchan's character was originally intended to have been killed off but after the change of script, the character lived in the end. It would have been inappropriate, said Desai, for the man who had just fended off death in real life to be killed on screen. Also, in the released film the footage of the fight scene is frozen at the critical moment, and a caption appears onscreen marking this as the instant of the actor's injury and the ensuing publicity of the accident. While filming an action scene,[30] Bachchan was doing his own stunts. He had to fall onto a table and then on the ground.

B[A]chchan had probably dealt with stress so long, he was not about to concede to sitting under the open glare of publicity with one inch of himself exposed. So when I asked him, if he would do anything differently in his life, he quipped, "Next time round, I'd like to be in your shoes, asking all the questions." Next moment his eyes and mind were again glued to the TV.
