Some of Amitabh Bachchan’s most successful films were under Manmohan Desai’s banner, MKD Films. Together they made blockbuster films like Parvarish, Amar Akbar Anthony, Coolie, Suhaag, Desh Premi, Naseeb, Mard, Ganga Jamuna Saraswati and Toofan. Amitabh’s first film under the MKD banner was the 1977 hit Parvarish while the last film was Toofan in 1989.
leo1.jpg Amitabh Bachchan has appeared in over 130 films, many of them, particularly those from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, were huge hits. He married Jaya Bhaduri, herself an accomplished actresses, at the peak of her career.
Bachchan made his debut with J.P. Dutta's Refugee (2000). After that, his career consisted of films that went un-noticed at the box office. It was not until 2004, that the actor delivered a hit and a critically acclaimed performance, in the films Dhoom and Yuva. His performance in the latter was praised for which he received his first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category as well as many other awards. Since then, Bachchan has starred in films that have been commercially and critically successful and has established himself as one of the leading actors of the industry.
During the late 1980s, after his brief stint in politics, Bachchan's films became less and less successful. Many films did very poorly, such as Jaadugar and Toofan, both from 1989. In the early 1990s he regained some success with his power-packed performance in Agneepath and the following year in Hum which was a huge hit. Hum was mainly a hit because of its use of a popular song, "Jumma Chumma". However after more flops at the box office he took a break fron the film industry after 1992, his last film being Khuda Gawah, released that same year.
The adulation for Amitabh became clear when he was gravely injured during the filming of ‘Coolie’ in 1983. While he was battling for life in the hospital, the whole nation offered prayers at temples and mosques for his recovery. His other hits with ‘Man’ were ‘Parvarish’ (1977), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Desh Premee’ (1982) and ‘Mard’ (1985).
