Amistad Revolt: Steven Spielberg
built 653 days ago
Projo.com invites you to explore the story behind Steven Spielberg's latest film, "Amistad," a tale of the 19th-century slaves' revolt that becomes America's first civil rights battle. History is made when this case reaches the Supreme Court, as former President John Quincy Adams defends the rights of the Amistad captives. Years later, history is recreated in Rhode Island as Spielberg joins a growing number of filmmakers using the state for a backdrop. Learn more about the movie, and the story of Amistad itself, through Providence Journal reports, Web links and more.

The story of the famous 1839 slave revolt on the small schooner, La Amistad has been depicted in numerous books, journals, articles, artwork and in Amistad, the well-noted film, directed by Steven Spielberg. The aftermath of the Amistad revolt and the subsequent trial eventually led to the founding of the non denominational organization, the American Missionary Association (AMA). AMA founded hundreds of schools and colleges for freed African Americans, after the Civil War, and a large number of  other educational and social institutions for people of all races in need of assistance.  Today, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) with an AMA background are still producing many of the countries top educators, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.  Because of the Amistad mutiny and subsequent trial, the nation's largest African American archives, the Amistad Research Center, was founded in 1966 at Fisk University as part of the university's Race Relations department.  The Amistad Research Center has a long and rich history.  Today, the Amistad Research Center is located in Tilton Memorial Hall on the campus of Tulane University  in New Orleans, LA. The collection contains approximately 250,000 photographs, over fifteen million manuscripts, 25,000 books-including rare prints and oral histories. The Center is guardian to more than 800 works of African & African American art including works by several internationally renowned 19th and 20th century African American masters.
