Amish: United States
built 250 days ago
The social architecture of Amish society exhibits distinctive features. Leisure, work, education, play, worship, and friendship revolve around the immediate neighborhood. In some settlements, Amish babies are born in hospitals, but they are ... born at home or in local birthing centers. Weddings and funerals occur at home. There are frequent trips to other settlements or even out of state to visit relatives and friends. But for the most part the Amish world pivots on local turf.

Probably the current total adult membership of all Amish groups would be on the order of 180,000 spread across 22 states. The largest concentration, with about 45,000 members is in Ohio. There are smaller numbers in Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, etc. About 1,500 live in south-eastern Ontario, Canada. 6,7

Amish teachers, trained in Amish schools, are not required to be certified in most states. Often the brightest and best of Amish scholars, they return to the classroom in their late teens and early twenties to teach. Amish school directors select them for their ability to teach and their commitment to Amish values. Frequently single women, they typically drop their occupation if wed. Periodic meetings with other teachers, a monthly teachers' magazine, and ample common sense prepare them for the task of teaching 30 students in eight grades. With three or four pupils per grade, teachers often teach two grades at a time.

The Amish are not involved in state or national politics, they do not vote, and they do not serve in the military. They ... reject social security and most types of insurance. Instead, they pool their resources to help Amish families in need and will visit doctors, dentists, and opticians when necessary.

[Copyvio] - The french news agency "Agence France Presse" has used text from the article about the Amish from the DE Wikipedia in a news report. So far no problem. What is a problem is that the have not given any attribution to Wikipedia like is required by the GFDL-licence. When contacted by Wikipedian Mathias Schindler the AFP office confirmed that the text was from Wikipedia and stated that this was against "AFP policy" because "wikipedia is not a citable source". They refuse to retract or amend the story with proper attribution for Wikipedia and the license. AFP sued Google News in 2005 because in AFP's point of view, Google was violating their copyright with there "google news" service.
