Amish: Amish Life
built 255 days ago
The controlling concept of Amish belief is the Ordnung. This is the traditional order, an unwritten code upon which all of Amish life and practice is based. It is the code of conduct that governs all Amish actions, transmitted by tradition rather than by explicit rules. The bishop of each district is responsible for interpreting and perpetuating the Ordnung.

The Amish Farm & House opened over 50 years ago, in 1955, in direct response to the growing demand for correct information about the Amish. It filled and continues to fill a much needed role in the tourist industry and provides visitors with an accurate glimpse into the Plain People's way of life.
Quakers are unrelated to the Amish, although the early Quakers were influenced to some degree by the Anabaptists, and were ... "plain people" in manner and lifestyle. Modern Quakers have since abandoned their traditional dress.
Schools play a critical role in the preservation of Amish culture. They not only reinforce Amish values, but ... shield youth from contaminating ideas. Moreover, schools restrict friendships with non-Amish peers and impede the flow of Amish youth into higher education and professional life. Amish schools promote practical skills to prepare their graduates for success in Amish society. Some selective testing indicates that Amish pupils compare favorably with rural peers in public schools on standardized tests of basic skills.
While farming was not an integral tenet of Anabaptism, agriculture has always been a major part of the Amish lifestyle. Believing that practical knowledge, hard work and long hours are the "technological marvels" that make farm life fruitful, they practice impressive levels of thrift and self-sufficiency which they believe are mandated by the Bible. Accordingly, they attribute their successes in farming to divine blessing.
