Amiga Explorer makes it possible to access the resources (files, disk images, ROMs) of an Amiga computer from the Windows desktop. It is even possible to download ADF disk images on the PC, and drag-and-drop them to an Amiga floppy drive. Amiga Explorer works over a null-modem serial cable, via a Bluetooth dongle attached to the Amiga serial port, or via Ethernet or any other TCP/IP link. The Amiga side can even be installed over the serial cable and run from RAM or floppy. The only requirement is that the Amiga be bootable into a standard Workbench environment (1.2 or higher... compatible with AmigaOS 4.0 and MorphOS). Professional users who already have a network in place can use Amiga Explorer in parallel with other tools.

Since then, the rights of the Amiga brand and technology has changed hands countless times. All tries to revive it as a hardware brand have failed so far. Currently, there is a 'new Amiga' on the market (AmigaOne), but you can hardly call it successful. Only the OS still pretty much always stayed on top of technological development, with the latest version (AmigaOS 3.9) being released in 2001.

For those of you who haven't seen or used an Amiga before, you may be wondering why this machine is still talked about to this day. There are several reasons, but the main one is the fact that it was the first real affordable multimedia PC/Console. It had genuinely amazing graphics and sounds, and a mouse and a Windows-like AmigaOS interface which was leading edge back in the mid 80's. Furthermore, games developers could use its advanced multimedia features to produce incredible games which made those you could play on other machines and even commercial arcade machines seem stupid in comparison.

Für den Erweiterungsport des Amiga 500/500+ brachte Commodore das externe CD-ROM-Laufwerk A570 heraus. Im Grunde handelte es sich dabei um die zusätzliche Komponente, welche das Commodore CDTV vom Amiga 500 unterschied. So konnte das A570 die speziellen CDTV-Datenträger wiedergeben und bot die selbe CD-Player-Oberfläche. Mangels einer direkten Anbindung an den Soundprozessor des Amiga 500 besaß das A570 eigene Audioausgänge. Bei dem CD-Laufwerk handelte es sich um ein Single-Speed-Gerät. Zusätzlich bot das A570 den vom CDTV bekannten SCSI-Steckplatz sowie einen Steckplatz für Speichererweiterungen bis 2 MB.

The Amiga's animation display capabilities ... encouraged the development of inexpensive 3D animation software for the platform. Graphic designers and video artists began to dabble with the new medium, using tools similar to those employed at the cutting-edge animation studios. Rendering was quite slow on those early processors, but the Amiga's multitasking OS allowed background rendering tasks to continue while the machine was being used for other things.

Besonders in den frühen Amiga-Produkten verewigten sich die Entwickler mehr oder weniger offen außerhalb des offiziellen Rahmens. Bekannt war die so genannte Guru Meditation. Diese bezeichnet den Zustand eines durch das Amiga-Betriebssystem abgefangenen schweren Programmfehlers. Sie ist vergleichbar mit dem „Blue Screen Of Death“ der auf Windows NT basierenden Systeme, oder mit dem „80-Bomben-Bus-Error“ des Atari ST. Zusätzlich zu diesem konnte man aber mittels eines Rechtsklicks der Maus einen internen Debugger aufrufen und den Amiga-Speicher über einen weiteren Computer, der an der seriellen Schnittstelle angeschlossen wurde, durchsehen und so genau feststellen, was den Fehler verursachte. Auch wenn diese Fehlermeldung später durch ein nüchternes „Software Failure“ ersetzt wurde, hielt sich die Bezeichnung umgangssprachlich. Natürlich gibt es auch mittels diverser Aktionen abrufbare Easter Eggs, und nur mit einem Speichermonitor finden sich eine Reihe versteckter Botschaften im Betriebssystem-ROM.
