"America's Sweethearts" squanders so badly because it fails to uphold the courage of its convictions. Something is definitely off about the whole enterprise. Where it should be a lethally funny attack at the cliches of the Hollywood system, it holds no true insight or daring. And where it should be a cute romance, it is--for lack of a better word--sterile. Director Joe Roth may be the head of the promising new studio, Revolution Films, but as the one in charge of "America's Sweethearts," he has wasted the talents of a large bevy of people who probably should have known better in the first place.

At first, trying to maintain the peace between Gwen and Eddie seems to be the biggest hurdle facing Kiki and Lee as the couple, deemed "America's Sweethearts" by the public and the press, really can't stand to be around each other. But soon Kiki finds that she's faced with a more important concern as her longtime friendship with Eddie begins to take a romantic turn.

Often called "America's Sweethearts," the Cheerleaders recently visited troops recuperating from injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. In September, service members in Cuba were treated to shows by the Cheerleaders. They ... participated in a USO Care Package stuffing party, helping to assemble 3,000 packages for troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and those supporting Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The Cheerleaders traveled on the USO's first tour to Iraq in 2003. The squad has entertained troops stationed all over the world, including Kosovo, Germany, Belgium, England, Iceland, the United Arab Emirates, Bosnia, Italy and Hungary. In 1991, the Cheerleaders were presented with the USO's 50th anniversary award, and, in 1997, the USO recognized their dedication with its most prestigious honor, the "Spirit of Hope" Award.

"America's Sweethearts" is one of the summer of 2001's bigger success stories, but the grand potential it had is sadly lost throughout. This really could have been a fine romantic comedy and a great showbiz satire, but in the end, it feels so manufactured and predictable. Despite the great talent behind it, nothing really sets it apart. It's nothing great, but it's tolerable. The DVD has a good transfer, but the extras and sound mix are weak. The price is a bit steep too.

[T]he junket is ... where America's Sweethearts careens from smart to silly. Eddie gets cactus burrs in his crotch, the junket journalists are inane ninnies who never factor into the plot, the Spaniard becomes the target of endless jokes about his, uh, endowments, and in a moment of true nonsense, Eddie nearly falls off the hotel roof.

America's Sweethearts is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, as well as a full frame version. Columbia has done a very nice job on this transfer, making sure that all aspects of the colors, black levels and flesh tones are even and bright. No grain or dirt was spotted at any time, and only the slightest amount of edge enhancement was seen from time to time. Overall this is a very nice looking print.
