In the end, America's Sweethearts fails not so much because it's a terrible movie but because it doesn't live up to its potential. But if you're in the mood for a fluffy romantic comedy, you might go away happy. And, hey, you get to see an extended sequence of a dog licking Billy Crystal's crotch.

The story of "America's Sweethearts" follows every rule in the book of romantic comedies and the ending is hardly a surprise, but it doesn't matter. In comparison to some of the lifeless entries in the genre ("Runaway Bride", "Someone Like You", etc.), a lot of interesting stuff happens between the opening and closing credits. Crystal is a veteran of Hollywood and Tolan is a veteran of satire (he was a writer for HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show", which lampooned late-night talk shows), and together, they mercilessly skewer the marketing machinations of Hollywood, leaving no stone unturned.

America's Sweethearts is a breezy comedy that gets a lot of mileage out of its top-flight ensemble cast. Even if the directing by former Hollywood studio chief Joe Roth and the screenplay by Billy Crystal and Peter Tolan are both on the bland side, the folks in front of the camera prove to have more than enough comic firepower to make the film a decent, if not entirely successful, night at the flicks.

As world-weary Lee the ringmaster publicist, Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally) attempts to keep all the balls in the air at once, pulling double duty as America's Sweethearts co-star, co-scriptwriter and producer. And there there are plenty of laughs to be had, especially once the elaborate end set up comes into play, which is frankly irresistable for anyone who's into movies. If you look at America's Sweethearts closely enough though, this is a case of how a charismatic and pretty seasoned cast can make an average film a lot better.

If there's any justice in the world, America's Sweethearts will flame-out despite its star-power. Once word leaks out about this dud, the only chance of long lines at the box office will be if someone sees an image of the Virgin Mary in Billy's salt-and-pepper beard.
