American Idol: Songs
built 178 days ago
The first episode in the competitive portion of American Idol just started on the East Coast, and tonight the top 12 guys are giving their spin to the songs of the 1960s. The above shot is of the young ladies remaining in the competition--in a nice bit of reverse chivalry, they get to kick back and relax a bit while the men go first--but note that there are only 11 of them, thanks to one notable absence: Carly "Hennessy" Smithson, the former MCA signee who's caused quite the firestorm before even stepping on Idol's big stage. The obvious question: Where is she? Was she on a bathroom break? Did her visa expire again? Is she going to come back from the commercial with a huge record contract?

Debut Album: Free Yourself Barrino made an immediate impression on American Idol with her stylized, gospel-influenced sound, and her explosive stage presence. Her audition version of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" made her an early favorite in the competition. Her standout performance during the course of the show was a heartfelt staging, begun seated, of the Porgy and Bess standard "Summertime" that left her in tears from "feeling the song" and earned praise from the judges, as well as landing her on the Emmy Awards's 2004 list of greatest television moments. "Summertime" was ... labeled by idol judge Randy Jackson as the best performance in the show's history.
Apple iTunes American Idol fans may be familiar with Graham when he opened up for Kelly Clarkson on both “Breakaway” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes” tours in 2005. The two were ... romantically linked but split because of time apart but remain good friends. The song is available on iTunes and you can you can find out more about Graham on his Myspace.
