American Idol is a television show that claims to find talent and a unique singer out of a pool of contestants. In reality, the show is designed to find someone who can sing at least decently and then throws them to the record labels where their creative control is sapped away. Most of the time, winners are not successful in their careers. The show is generally aimed at young people who have the opportunity to vote for the singer they think has the most talent. Oftentimes, these people will vote for the contestant who they think is the "hottest" as opposed to someone with actual talent, thereby throwing the whole concept out the window. Over the course of the last few seasons, the show has become more about ratings than singing as indicated by showing more of the "bad" singers for the sake of audience entertainment.
In American Idol people first audition before the three judges in cities across the United States. One of the most popular portions of each season are initial episodes showcasing auditions of American Idol hopefuls auditioning before the panel of judges. Poor singers often face intense and humbling criticism from the judges, and especially from Cowell, who can be harsh and blunt in his criticism. Some poor performances have attained notoriety on their own; these have included season two's performance of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" by Keith Beukelaer and season three's rendition of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" by William Hung. The three judges narrow down the contestants to thirty-two semi-finalists who are invited to Hollywood to perform on the show.
The more insane American Idol fans out there have a tendency to gather into groups online, with said groups marking their territory via cute avatars, picture-choked signature files, and semi-catchy names. The most nutty/devoted/well-named group is, of course, Taylor Hicks' Soul Patrol, who make up for their hero's low SoundScans with fervent comment-section support of their icon; there's ... the Con Con Girls (for Constantine Maroulis and, presumably, the blow-dryer that sets his chest hair just right); the Fanjayas (in support of Sanjaya Malakar and his ever-changing locks) and the Claymates (you can probably guess who they're rallying behind). lacking. For example, Vote For The Worst favorite Danny Noriega's fans are seriously referring to themselves as "Danny's Fannies." Seriously. no.) Other fan groups from this year are listed after the jump; judge for yourself whether the somewhat uninspired names are indicative of this season's relative quality of singers.

The new season of “American Idol” is under way, of course — but don’t forget about last year’s winner, Jordin Sparks. The 18-year-old singer is continuing to promote her self-titled debut, which was released in late November, with a chat and performance of “Tattoo” on Fox’s “Talkshow With Spike Feresten” on Saturday night. Jordin Sparks has had a poor outing, barely cracking the Billboard albums chart’s top 10 in its first week of release.
