American Civil War: African Americans
built 278 days ago
Over the course of the Civil War, 18,000 African American men, and more than a dozen African American women, served in the U.S. Navy, about 15 percent of the total enlisted force. These sailors served on almost every one of the nearly 700 Navy vessels. Eight African-American sailors earned the Medal of Honor for their heroism in battle.
Grade 4-8-Using a clear style and lively tone, this book provides a look at the Civil War and its leaders and includes activities such as battle reenactments and recipes for soldiers' rations. The contributions of women, African Americans, and even children are described. Sidebars provide biographical and other information about individual soldiers and events. Occasional quotes provide a humanistic view of the war. Antislavery is offered as the main reason for the war, with only a brief mention that other reasons even existed. Maps and black-and-white reproductions are scattered throughout.
This park includes the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial monument honoring the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the most famous African-American unit of the Civil War, and the subject of the movie Glory. The memorial was designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens, sponsored by the family of Robert Gould Shaw. It was dedicated in 1897 and is recognized as one of the finest works of American sculpture.

Jesse Jackson- an African American politician, professional civil rights activist, and Baptist minister. The gains made by African Americans in the civil rights and Black Power movements not only obtained certain rights for African Americans, but changed American society in far-reaching and fundamentally important ways. Prior to the 1950s, Americans were still living in the shadow of slavery and Jim Crow, when, in the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., African Americans and their supporters challenged the nation to "rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed that all men are created equal…."[31]
