American Airlines: United States
built 605 days ago
In 1939, American Airlines opened the industry's first VIP lounge at LaGuardia Airport in New York, forever changing travel at airports. The Admirals Club has become synonymous with comfort and elegance at major airports throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Latin America. American Airlines currently has 40 Admirals Clubs across the system, for First and Business Class travellers.
With the airline industry in chaos, American had an opportunity to make their brand stand out in the marketplace and to strengthen its relationship with customers. American had done some of that with the “More Room Through Coach”, making it a favorite among many coach flyers. However, they have since removed the extra space over the last year and are now back to LRTC (less room through coach), allowing competitor United to have the last laugh on that front - one of United Airlines new ads says, “Fly American and you could kick yourself. Literally.” Additionally, AA has stripped its brushed aluminum birds of pillows, food, even milk in coach (non-dairy powdered creamer is still available), as well as instituted reservation fees, even for elite customers.
American Airlines says it has filed fare increases of $10 one-way, and $20 round-trip “in an effort to recover some of the costs associated with recent large increases in the price of crude oil and jet fuel”. Not all of the airline’s ticket fares will be affected by the move, just those for travel within the continental United States.
American - Ft. Worth, TX On January 10, 2001, American announced its plans to acquire the financially troubled TWA, the nation's eighth largest U. S. carrier. The merger would allow American to compete more effectively with the proposed merger between United and U. S. Air. On April 9, 2001, government regulators approved American's acquisition of TWA, currently making American the largest U. S. commercial airline.

American quickly announced plans to use the unused frequencies, and the DOT at the time didn't give Spirit any of American's frequencies. But the mess stirred the governments of the United States and Colombia last September to allow more flights between the two countries.
American wanted a generic statement of support from the unions to explore merger possibilities. Pilots refused to sign on, at least at this point. It's unclear how the flight attendants and ground workers responded.
