"In February 1999, American, British Airways, Canadian Airlines International Limited, Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas Airways formed the global alliance ONEworld. In September 1999, Finnair and Iberia joined these five founding members. Also, in June 2000, Aer Lingus and LanChile joined the ONEworld alliance. Following the acquisition of Canadian by Air Canada, Canadian terminated its membership in ONEworld in June 2000. The ONEworld alliance links the networks of the member carriers to enhance customer service and smooth connections to the destinations served by the alliance, including linking the carriers' frequent flyer programs and access to the carriers' airport lounge facilities.

American Airlines wanted to reduce its IT costs, so it leveraged EDS’ Best ShoreSM Global Delivery Model. Through this initiative, American migrated some of its IT support to EDS centers in Brazil and Argentina, which provided a high level of service at a lower cost. Throughout the migration, EDS emphasized knowledge transfer and developed communication strategies that overcame the initial language barriers. As a result of the migration, American achieved its goal of lowering costs, and now it has a proven process in place for future outsourcing possibilities.

American Airlines is a solid, middle-of-the-road airline when it comes to customer service. Which is to say, there is no abundance of horror stories coming from American. But, at the same time, when it comes to marginal cases where a little bit of good will could take it a long way, it often hesitates - especially when it comes to paying out damages or issuing vouchers. All in all, American could probably do better. It could ... do much, much worse.
