built 621 days ago
American Airlines is supposed to decide by the end of business today whether to join the Allied Pilots Association on requesting mediation to help get contract talks moving. The pilot group said last week that it would petition the National Mediation Board for help, but that it hoped to make the request jointly with the airline.

Parties to the investigation are the Federal Aviation Administration, American Airlines, General Electric Engines, Allied Pilots Association, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants. In addition, as the aircraft was manufactured in France, the Safety Board's counterpart agency, the Bureau Enquêtes Accidents, is the Accredited Representative to the investigation under the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Airbus Industries is an advisor to the BEA.

American Airlines has proposed a change in a part of its pension plan for pilots - the so-called "B Plan," which is a defined-contribution benefit that pays out upon retirement. That means that the airline puts money into the plan (annual contributions of 11 percent of eligible compensation) and pilots get paid depending on how the plan performs. It's currently managed by American Beacon, the airline's investment subsidiary.
