American Airlines unleashed a new print campaign featuring retro styling and two men walking off a "Casablanca"-style airplane to what looks like a Hawaiian vacation. (Though as Queerty notes, what gay man would wear socks with loafers?)

On January 25, 1930, American Airways was incorporated as a single company, based in New York, with routes from Boston, New York and Chicago to Dallas, and a route from Dallas to Los Angeles. The airline operated its routes with wood and fabric covered Fokker Trimotors and all metal Ford Trimotors. In 1934 American began flying Curtiss Condor biplanes fitted with sleeping berths.

American officials said they took into account comments from women in focus groups in the design of its new business-class seats in wide-body aircraft. The seats move slightly forward, allowing for a bit more privacy from the person in the next seat. American ... added hooks on the seat backs when women wondered where to store their purses.

American has been testing its new procedures for the past several weeks at most of its airports. American's December on-time dependability, reported to the Department of Transportation (DOT), was 81.8 percent and its completion factor, the number of flights flown expressed as a percentage of flights scheduled, was 99.7 for the month.

To launch the advertising, American is introducing a new, 30-second TV commercial aimed primarily at international premium class travelers. The spot exclusively features computer-generated imagery and will air in select markets during this year's Academy Awards program on Sunday, Feb. 24.
