A controversial ruling on seniority integration for pilots at US Airways and the former America West Airlines is threatening to delay the full operational implementation of the airlines' merger. The May decision by a federal arbitrator came after an interpretation of the merger policy of the Air Line Pilots Association. Many pilots at the former US Airways say it favors less experienced pilots at America West, and they may seek to delay or prevent it from going into effect.

As other airlines in poor financial shape, such as TWA, underwent radical reorganization, America West explored the possibility of taking over some of their operations. In the fall of 1990 the company made its second serious inquiry into an East Coast shuttle, entering into talks with Pan Am about taking over its Washington-New York-Boston route. Although those talks, too, fell through, the company did receive a much-coveted approval from the federal government to start service between Honolulu and Nagoya. This boon shortly followed a September 1990 announcement that America West intended to lease more than 100 planes from Airbus Industrie, the European aircraft consortium, for use on possible new routes. (AWA chose the Airbus jets over Boeings largely for the cockpit and maintenance commonality across various types in the Airbus family.) Despite these signs of aggressive expansion, the airline ended 1990 in poor financial shape, racking up losses of $74.7 million.

On May 19, 2005, America West Holdings Corporation announced it would merge with the Arlington County, Virginia based US Airways Group. The new entity is named US Airways Group and is headquartered in America West's former corporate offices. In reality, the merger amounted to a takeover of US Airways, which had been in bankruptcy twice, by America West. US Airways Group corporate offices in Virginia were shut down, and most US Airways management were laid off. America West CEO Doug Parker became CEO of the merged companies, and his management team remains in control. The merger was completed on September 27, 2005, and America West now operates under the US Airways brand, which was felt to be more appropriate to the combined airline's nationwide route network.

US Airways pilots work under two contracts - one for pilots who came from America West Airlines after it bought US Airways when it was in bankruptcy protection in September 2005, and another for pilots who were always at US Airways. Contract negotiations began shortly after the airlines combined, and there are no deals in sight.
