Amelia Earhart: Southern California
built 170 days ago
Amelia Earhart was born July 24, 1897. Her father, Edwin Earhart, worked with railroads. Her mother, Amy, traveled with Edwin. So they left Amelia and her younger sister, Muriel, with their grandparents for the school year. Every once in a while, Amelia's father would take the family on a long trip. She visited cities in Iowa, Minnesota, and California.
In the fall of 1919, Earhart enrolled in a pre-med program at Columbia University, but in 1920 quit to rejoin her recently reunited parents in California. Several months after her arrival, she attended a stunt-flying expedition with her father at Daugherty Field, Long Beach. Earhart's heart raced when an aircraft flew directly over their seats. The next day she was given a 10-minute flight.

Several months after her arrival in California Amelia and her father went to an "aerial meet" at Daugherty Field in Long Beach. She had become very interested in flying. The next day, given a helmet and goggles, she boarded the open-cockpit biplane for a 10 minute flight over Los Angeles.
