Amelia entered Ogontz School near Philadelphia in 1916. The following year, after visiting her sister Muriel in Toronto over Christmas, Amelia decided not to return to Ogontz School and graduate, but instead to remain and join the war effort in Toronto. In February 1918, Amelia left Ogontz School and moved to Toronto to become a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse at the Spadina Military Convalescent Hospital. While in Toronto, she began frequenting a local air field, and soon became fascinated with flying. Following the Armistice in November 1918, she returned to the United States and entered Columbia University as a pre-medical student in the fall of 1919. Amelia soon realized that the practical aspects of medicine did not appeal to her, and left Columbia in 1920 to join her parents in Los Angeles, in an effort to help keep their marriage intact.

After the crash, Amelia ... took extra instruction from John 'Monte' Montejo, a pilot more experienced with the Airster. She wanted to learn some stunting to know how to get herself out of unexpected circumstances she might encounter in the air. Finally, she felt ready to solo. She had to abort her first attempt due to a broken shock absorber. On the second attempt, her takeoff was unremarkable, she took her Airster to 5,000 feet and finished with a "thoroughly rotten landing."
The ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum honored pioneers in flight, including the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford. Those in attendance included former astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, and actor and aviation enthusiast John Travolta.

In the words of her sister, Muriel Earhart Morrissey, "Amelia was a person who wanted things accomplished. She was interested in so many things -- flying, horses, poetry, sports, reading -- almost everything. . . She was filled with curiosity and a sense of adventure.
Amelia On the day of the crash, Amelia arrived early to Juliet's for the book club meeting. Seeing Ethan working outside on her way in, she jokingly chastised him for taking so long to fix Juliet's plumbing. Inside, Amelia noticed that Juliet was upset about something, and pressed her to know what it was about. Juliet then requested that Amelia not tell anyone what she was about to show her. As Juliet was about to reveal Ben's X-rays, they were interrupted by the doorbell; presumably other book club members had arrived.
