Amber was one of the first substances used by man for decoration, and it was ... employed at a very early period for amulets and for medicinal purposes. More or less shapeless pieces of rough amber, marked with circular depressions, have been found in Prussia, Schleswig-Holstein, and Denmark, in deposits of the Stone Age. These depressions are sometimes regularly disposed and at other times irregularly, and seem intended to imitate similar depressions found in large stones and rocks, often the work of man's hand, but occasionally the result of natural causes. In Hoernes' opinion they marked the resting place of the spirit or spirits believed to animate the stone, and hence it is probable that the amber fragments were used as talismans or amulets. Amber has a low density of 1,05-1,09 g/cm, this is the reason why it easily floats. It is not very hard (2-3 Mohs), and easy to cut and polish. Pieces of clear honey-color only formed under the influence of sunlight. Pieces that are not translucent are characteristic for resin that formed inside the trunk of the trees. Pieces with animal- or plant inclusions are very rare. When the resin was still fresh, it was sticky.

The Amber Room remained in the possession of Russia until 1944 when it mysteriously vanished. What happened is not fully known, it is known that the Russians had removed the amber panels from the room to a hiding and storage place in Novosibirsk. Invading Nazi soldiers discovered this. The room was crated up and transported to Kaliningrad. But in 1945 allied troops were about to move into Kaliningrad and the amber panels were moved again. Exactly where they were moved again is unknown.
