In November 2007, Amazon launched Amazon Kindle, an e-book reader which downloads content over "Whispernet," a free EV-DO wireless service on the Sprint Nextel network. Initial offerings include approximately 90,000 books, newspapers, magazines and blogs. The screen uses E Ink technology to reduce battery consumption.

At the very end of the call, Bezos was asked about the shift in media from physical to digital and how that will impact Amazon. Media accounted for 59 percent of Amazon’s sales last quarter (or $3.3 billion), and Amazon is moving aggressively to offer digital movies, music, and books. Bezos thinks this move to digital will eventually pay off:

To begin with, any book which has no assigned sales rank has yet to sell even one copy on Amazon. So, if you're looking at a book with a sales rank of 4,000,000, then you at least know it has sold at least one copy.
