Amanda Coetzer is South Africa's best-known female tennis player. Coetzer turned pro in 1988 and began a steady if unspectacular career: her highest world ranking was #3 late in the 1997 season. By the end of 2000 she had won seven singles and seven doubles tournament titles; her best showing in Grand Slam tournaments came in reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open (1996 and '97) and the French Open (1997). She is sometimes called a "giant-killer" thanks to her height (5'2") and her habit of beating higher-ranked players, including multiple victories over Steffi Graf in the 1990s. As with Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis, Coetzer's blonde good looks have made her a favorite with Internet fans.

Amanda Coetzer has been the ray of hope for South Africa in women’s tennis over the last decade. But at age 30 she still commands respect for her tenacity and speed around the courts. At only 5’2', in pre-metric terms, she is one of the smallest players on the circuit and has had to rely on a tactical game much more than most.
Amanda Coetzer thrashed Steffi Graf at The Australian Open this morning (Jan. 19) 6-2, 7-5. The spunky little springbok began the match with unparalleled confidence as she streaked ahead 4-1 in the first set, then finally took it 6-2. Steffi, obviously shocked by the first set, came back into the 2nd with a vengence and stormed ahead 4-2. The next game took about 20 minutes as the two battled over duece. Steffi finally took that game to lead 5-2, and looked like she would close out the set.

Late November of last year with the 2002 season winding down, Amanda Coetzer was planning her training preparation for the 2003 up-coming tournaments in Australia. Amanda is well known for her speed along the baseline and top physical conditioning; ... she was looking for that extra edge to elevate her athletic prowess on the court. Cris Carter's Fast Program, a sports training facility located in Boca Raton, FL, provided that extra edge in Amanda's game. Immediately the Fast staff went to work challenging Amanda in areas like reaction time, directional change, balance, power, and of course speed. Frank Ceresoli, the Director of Sports Training, stated, "Amanda has demonstrated considerable improvement, especially in foot speed".

At 31, Amanda Coetzer is surrounded by players leaving tennis. She is not interested in joining them. In a week at the US Open when Pete Sampras, Michael Chang and Jeff Tarango all have announced their retirements, the 14th-seeded Coetzer lost decisively but is sticking around.

In 1992 Coetzer climbed 50 places in the world rankings to 17. She made the semi-finals of two big tournaments, in Boca Raton and at the Italian Open, her scalps including sixth-seed Jennifer Capriati in the American tournament and third-seed Gabriella Sabatini in Rome. She ... claimed two doubles titles, one in Toronto and the other in Puerto Rico. Tennis Magazine named her the year’s Most Improved Female Player.
