Dr James Gordon, who was ... the first chair of the Advisory Council to NIH's office of Alternative Medicine, was, for ten years, a research psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health. He has spent more than 30 years developing a holistic approach to medicine, and exploring and practicing a variety of CAM therapies including acupuncture, nutrition, herbal therapies, musculoskeletal manipulation and a wide variety of mind-body approaches.

The National Cancer Institute, along with the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, all part of NIH, have awarded a five-year $1.4 million grant to study a controversial treatment for pancreatic cancer using coffee enemas. Nicholas J. Gonzalez is a Manhattan doctor who treats his cancer patients with coffee enemas, a restricted diet, and up to 160 vitamin and enzyme capsules a day. The Washington Post reported he had been disciplined by a state medical board and had no traditional training in cancer treatment. The study at Columbia University's cancer center will enroll up to 90 pancreatic cancer patients.

The National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine advises and makes recommendations to the director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) on matters related to the center's research activities and functions. Birdsall will be part of an 18-member council that primarily provides secondary review of grant applications in light of NCCAM scientific program priorities and program balance. The council includes nine members licensed in complementary or alternative medicine and three are from the general public.
