Alprazolam
built 513 days ago
Alprazolam is a short half-life benzodiazepine. Duration of action after a single dose is determined by redistribution rather than metabolism. Tolerance develops to the sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects. It does not develop to the anxiolytic or skeletal muscle-relaxing effects. Psychological and physical dependence may occur with prolonged use of benzodiazepines. The onset of withdrawal symptoms is usually seen on the first day without drug and lasts 5-7 days in patients receiving short half-life benzodiazepines, whereas, the onset occurs after 5 days with a duration of 10-14 days after abrupt discontinuance of long half-life benzodiazepines.

Alprazolam, like diazepam (valium®), its more famous cousin, is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer. It works by depressing activity in several areas of the brain which leads to several desired effects. It works to reduce anxiety, as a sedative, as a suppressor of seizure activity, and as a muscle relaxer. The exact mechanism for creating these effects remains unknown. Alprazolam represents an improvement on the original diazepam in that it lasts longer.

Alprazolam, like all benzodiazepines, has the potential for abuse, especially in individuals prone to addiction. Although it is not manufactured illegally, it is often diverted to the black market. The state of relaxation, anxiolysis, disinhibition and euphoria induced by benzodiazepines is the main reason for their illicit use.

alprazolam 2mg tablets Alprazolam, like all benzodiazepines, has the potential for abuse. Although it is not manufactured illegally, and its misuse and abuse is dwarfed by benzodiazepines like flunitrazepam and temazepam, it is still often diverted to the black market, particularily in the United States where alprazolam is the most widely prescribed benzodiazepine. The state of relaxation, anxiolysis, and disinhibition induced by benzodiazepines is the main reason for their illicit use.
Alprazolam may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Alprazolam should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

Alprazolam can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose or take it more often or for a longer time than your doctor tells you to. Do not stop taking alprazolam without talking to your doctor. Suddenly stopping to take alprazolam may worsen your condition and cause withdrawal symptoms (anxiousness, sleeplessness, irritability, and seizures). Withdrawal symptoms may be worse if you take more than 4 mg of alprazolam every day. Your doctor will decrease your dose gradually.
