In Alphaville, the compter (Alpha 60) controls much more than a single complex. Created by an evil human in an unspecified future time, the computer operates the entire city of Alphaville -- a city that could be in any place. Cold and oppressive, it has outlawed emotions and poetry. Alpha 60 is eventually defeated by intergalactic agent Lemmy Caution, who overcomes it by providing poetic answers to its straight questioning.

On the surface, the plot of Alphaville can be placed in a line of films driven by an Orwellian struggle against repression of the individual (Metropolis, Brazil, Dune, the majority of Twilight Zone episodes). Lemmy Caution is sort of like Paul Atraides, an outsider come to undo a regime thats needs undoing (the navigators of the Space Guild).

Alphaville A bizarre space-chase across a glass and metal landscape of futuristic Paris--here called Alphaville--is the movie's premise. Creating a dystopian "tomorrow" characterized by alienation and cold corporate comforts, Godard slyly suggests that the future is now. Secret agent man Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) travels across the expanses of intergalactic space and time to uncover the fate of his missing predecessor. Working under the alias of Ivan Johnson, Caution is accompanied in his quest by the lovely Natasha Vonbraun (Anna Karina), the daughter of a supposedly missing professor. Caution later discovers that the elder Vonbraun is the mastermind behind Alpha 60--the rigid, masterful computer that governs Alphaville. Alpha's job is to crush individuality, eradicating any human being who does not conform.

Eddie Constantine plays secret agent Lemmy Caution, an inter-galactic Dick Tracy sent from the Outlands (Earth?) across the "silence of infinite space" (in a Ford Mustang, no less!) to the capital of the galaxy, Alphaville. Alphaville is a city devised by renegade scientist Leonard Vonbraun (B-movie vet Howard Vernon), a.k.a. Leonard Nosferatu, who has established an evil technocracy run by the Alpha 60 computer, and whose city signs read "Science. Logic. Security. Prudence."

It's hard to tell whether the national symbolism in Alphaville is deliberate or not. The zone of Alphaville could represent France, with Lemmy and the 'Outlands' representing America and its archaic principles gradually infiltrating an advanced French culture. It's ... possible that Lemmy represents the past civilisation of forceful individualism and Alphaville symbolises the ever-increasing dominance of technology in everyday society. As a film, it paradoxically juggles chaos with control; it bombards the viewer with information without seeming to say anything.
