Alphaville is a German synthpop/-rock music group which gained popularity in the 1980s. The founding members were Marian Gold (real name Hartwig Schierbaum, born May 26, 1954 in Herford), Bernhard Lloyd (real name Bernhard Gößling, born June 6th, 1960 in Enger, Bielefeld) and Frank Mertens (real name Frank Sorgatz, born October 26, 1961 in Enger, Bielefeld). The band was at first named Forever Young. The band is best known for its two biggest hits, "Big in Japan" and "Forever Young", which was the theme for many high school proms in the 1980s.

In the mid-1980s, getting through high school without listening to Alphaville's "Forever Young" was about as difficult a feat as getting through high school without a pimple. While many German dance bands of the era pursued the EBM course, Alphaville coolly waltzed along, playing swooning, romantic Synth Pop in the tradition of Roxy Music and Ultravox. Marian Gold's preening vocals provided the lush backdrop to many an evening of teen whoopee. During the '90s, Alphaville of course attempted to reinvent themselves with a string of "mature" albums that only succeeded in pointing out their irrelevance. But hey, wasn't it grand while it lasted?

Alphaville is not a real town but a virtual city in an Internet game called The Sims Online, where thousands of paying subscribers log on each day to assume fictional identities and mingle in cyberspace. Indeed, none of Mr. Ludlow's possessions existed outside the game. But the recent decision by the game's owner, Electronic Arts, to terminate Mr. Ludlow's account Û forever erasing his simulated Sims persona Û has set off a debate over free expression and ethical behavior in online worlds that is reverberating in the real one.

In 1984, the re-named Alphaville released their debut single "Big in Japan", quickly followed by the album Forever Young. Despite its success, Frank Mertens left the band that year and was replaced by Ricky Echolette (born Wolfgang Neuhaus, in Cologne, August 6, 1960) in January 1985 – already credited in the "Forever Young" album.
