Along Came Polly

At the heart of it, Along Came Polly just doesn't try very hard. For all its plugged-toilet jokes, blind-ferret gags, and crazy foreigner/homosexual song-and-dance, it isn't at all offensive nor, save the explicit definition of the word, particularly scatological. It's never shocking, never anything more than a chuckle's worth of funny as it struggles to mine some laughs out of how obnoxious the French are (and isn't the mocker unable to let a mediocre joke die the more obnoxious?), and finds another example in Debra Messing (after Sean Hayes' double-gainer in The Cat in the Hat and Pieces of April) that "Will & Grace" owes a lot to Megan Mullally. Tossed off, clearly edited until the last minute, the saddest thing about Along Came Polly is that it was screened for critics in the Denver area and Disney's Teacher's Pet, possibly the one January release worth a damn this year, wasn't.-Walter Chaw

What keeps "Along Came Polly" from being a solid comedy is that the embarrassment and toilet humor don't fit in well with the sweet odd-couple romance. The idea that Reuben really wants to loosen up but doesn't know how until Polly shows him is one that works well for a charming comedy but is too mature to fit in well with the gross-out humor.

Along Came Polly will not fill you with the urge to set your pubic hair on fire. Neither will it induce terminal facial spasms, cause grown men to weep like children, or prompt oaths of vengeance against whoever developed the technology that makes babies appear to talk. Considering the quality of most January releases, that makes it almost Oscar-caliber. Sadly, it isn't able to do much more, despite two decent stars and a modest sprinkling of funny moments. Romantic comedies of its ilk are ruthlessly formulaic, surviving largely on chemistry and one-liners. Along Came Polly makes a game effort, but can't muster enough of either one to cover for its faults.

"Along Came Polly" has a few laughs, including the long-overdue definition of what a "shart" is, but they come and go without a whole lot of impact. The film, as a whole, falls victim to the same quandary. The machinations of the plot creak along as one cliched and unextraordinary event follows the next. As for the love story between Reuben and Polly, it is stillborn. There's nothing particularly terrible about "Along Came Polly," but, save for a handful of performances, nothing particularly good, either.

Along Came Polly is the sort of formulaic romantic comedy that you'll feel like you've seen a dozen times before. Notably Ruben's love for Polly compels him to radically change his lifestyle.

Many critics disliked Along Came Polly, blaming the forced chemistry and formulaic scenes. The movie earned the "Rotten" 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. [1] The film actually made back double its budget, making $87 million in total. [2]
