The writers for Alone are clearly guilty of grand theft cinema having ripped off scenes and plot elements from multiple sources including but not limited to: Aliens, Relic, Starship Troopers, Dawn of the Dead, Hellboy, and The X-Files among others. One would think that they’d be able to find something good when they’ve scoured all that material, but sadly you’d be wrong. The script deserves a special place all its own.

Besides the occult terminology, Alone in the Dark features an ancient crown supposedly given to Genghis Khan by extra-dimensional entities. The idea of some sort of demonic pact between Genghis Khan and beings from other dimensions was ... utilized in Robert E. Howard's "The Black Bear Bites" (found in Nameless Cults), and E. Hoffman Price's uncollected Pierre D'Artois story, "Lord of the Fourth Axis". In "Through the Gates of the Silver Key," it is suggested that the great Asian conquerors of history sold their souls to Yog-Sothoth to become the Ancient Ones, the minions of 'Um At-Atwil.

Alone in the Dark was panned by nearly every film critic. Internet Movie Database's score is 2.2/10 (12,872 votes) as of June 2007. Rottentomatoes.com ranked the film a score of 1% as of June 2007 and lists it as the 2nd worst reviewed movie of all time. At Metacritic, it was a score of 9%.

Alone in the Dark is ... sorely in need of a strong screen presence at its center; Slater’s is almost nil. A bigger (literally as well as figuratively) actor, like Vin Diesel or even The Rock, would have helped this movie immeasurably.

This is the BFG3000 of Alone in the Dark. Its devastating firepower is seriously hampered by its slow charge-up time, which means that anything you are aiming at can (and will) dodge the attack. If you are lucky enough to hit anything with the energy burst consider it dead.
