Sheedy was born in New York City to John J. Sheedy, Jr.,[1] a Manhattan-based advertising executive, and Charlotte Baum, a notable press agent who was involved in women's and civil rights movements.[2] Her parents divorced in 1971. She has two siblings, Patrick and Meghan.
Sheedy won raves for her raw, touching performance, and, in short time, again found herself working steadily. In 1999, she appeared in Allison Anders' Sugar Town and The Autumn Heart, the latter premiering at the {~Sundance Film Festival}. In addition to her film work, Sheedy continued to work in the theater, taking over John Cameron Mitchell's title role in the popular New York production of {+Hedwig and the Angry Inch}, a story about a German entertainer who is neither a man nor a woman but a fascinating composite of both.
The last decade has seen Sheedy depart from big-studio films like “Short Circuit” and “Betsy’s Wedding” to find her niche in New York’s independent film culture. She enjoys “filming as catch-can,” and “changing in phone booths,” she said.
