Total cost-savings won't be known until old cases are cleared, but preliminary e-billing figures show that Allstate's average cost per matter was down last year by roughly 6 percent, at a time when most law firms are raising prices. At the same time, in-house lawyers said in a survey that the quality of outside work was as good or better than before. "It's a win-win situation," says McCabe.

Allstate provides eligible employees paid time away from work in the form of a Paid Time Off (PTO) Bank to address personal needs such as vacation, family illness, and incidental illness absences not covered by the Short Term Disability (STD) plan. Full-time and regular part-time employees are eligible for PTO.
Allstate changed the terminology of the policy to "extended coverage", in order to convince the policy holders that coverage was still the same or even better. In reality the coverage was lowered.
