Allman Brothers Band: Albums
built 641 days ago
In the 38th Annual Grammy Awards held in February 1996, the Allman Brothers Band won the first Grammy in its 27-year history: Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Jessica," a track from the acclaimed live album 2nd Set. This 16-minute improvisation may be the longest single non-classical performance ever to win a Grammy. (Another track from 2nd Set, "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed," was ... nominated in the Pop Instrumental category.)

The Allman Brothers Band played numerous shows in the south before releasing their debut album, The Allman Brothers Band to great critical acclaim, though the blues-rock album found few listeners, attracting only a cult following. Most of the record had a blues-rock sound, but "Dreams", a spacy number in 12/8 time, would provide the framework for some of their live jams.

The Allman brothers were together for only three albums, but the Allman Brothers Band has endured, even thrived, with only one Allman on board, for almost 40 years. The first and, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, the best Southern-rock band, they were good students of the blues, covering Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson. By adding psychedelic guitar and a wing-it looseness, they expanded the definition of a roots band. Their legacy isnt only in offshoots like Govt Mule and the Derek Trucks Band, but in the extended flights of Dave Matthews, the roadhouse country of Keith Urban and the playing of anyone who appears at the annual Jammy awards.

In the 90's, the Allman Brothers reemerged with a series of well-received albums on Epic Records and reestablished themselves as a formidable touring act. The band was seen as elder statesmen (second only to the Grateful Dead) by the nascent "jam band" scene. Groups like Widespread Panic , Dave Matthews, and the Black Crowes emulated the Allman Brothers much like the Allman Brothers had once emulated T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, or Cream. This renewed prominence held a bonus for older fans, too - dozens of vintage live recordings (like Live at Ludlow Garage: 1970) flooded the market. But, the Allman Brothers' story - in terms of musical innovation - was already written, and had been since 1973.
