Allen Iverson: Scoring

In the case of Allen Iverson, for example, the man who called 911 to report being threatened at gunpoint is under no obligation to presume Iverson's innocence. Indeed, if he takes the witness stand at trial and falsely recants his story as a favor to a friend (or as a loyal basketball fan), he will be guilty of perjury.

Allen takes his leadership responsibilities much more seriously these days. His one appearance in the NBA Finals helped him realize how badly he wants a title to his name. Teammates will follow him. The question is whether he will have to leave Philly to get another shot at an NBA crown.

Now that Allen and Tawanna have marked their first year as a married couple, the spotlight is again aimed at the women in Iverson's turbulent life. Last month, Iverson, 27, racked up a slew of criminal charges after he allegedly barged into a West Philadelphia apartment looking for his wife. All but two misdemeanor charges have been dropped.

Iverson turned 30 in 2005. As he tried to gain entrance to his party... he was told that he couldn't enter because one of the President's daughters was in the club with her contingent of secret servicemen. Iverson was just beginning to get really angry when he was informed that the whole thing was being taped for an episode of MTV's Punk'd. Iverson thought it was very funny and even played the same joke on Jermaine O'Neal, forward for the Indiana Pacers, when he arrived for the birthday party later in the evening. The episode was shown in July.

Allen spent the night in jail, wondering what else could go wrong. When he was charged with “maiming by mob”—a law on the books to prevent the lynching of African-Americans—the case became a national sensation. With the networks now focused on Hampton, dozens of top attorneys vied to take Allen's case pro bono. He chose Herbert Kelly, a top defense attorney. During the trial, held in July of 1993, Allen listened as several witnesses placed him in the middle of the bowling alley fight. Kelly instructed his client to keep his mouth shut, chose not to put him on the stand, and managed to discredit much of the testimony.
