allah.jpg (12759 bytes) Allah is the name of the Supreme Being in the Arabic Language. The word Allah is never used for any other being or thing. The names for God found in other languages are all attributive or descriptive and are often used in the plural, but the word "Allah" is never used in the plural. In the absence of a parallel word in the English language, the original name "Allah" has been retained throughout the translation. http://www.alislam.org/ram/articles/00000025.htm Selected Verses of the Holy Quran, Copyright © 1996 Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam

In Islam, Allah is the essential personal name of God and comprises all His Beautiful Names (the 99 Names of God). When Allah is said, the One, the Supreme Being, the Creator, the Owner, the Sustainer, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing, the All-Encompassing, whose Names and Attributes are manifested in creation, comes to mind. This term ... refers to His absolute Oneness as well as His having no internal defect or external partner. In Arabic, the name is composed of four letters, ا ل ل ه (or Alif Lam Lam Ha) which when brought together make الله. Arab Christians believe that Allah consists of the Father, Son and Spirit, that together constitutes complete Allah.
Allah has every attribute of perfection which is fitting for Him. An example of an inappropriate attribute is humility, for it implies an acknowledgement of limits and inferiority, which clearly does not apply to Allah. Some people are under the misconception that Allah has only 99 names, based on the following hadith: Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "Allah has ninety-nine names - a hundred less one - whoever guards (or memorizes) them shall enter heaven." [Bukhari and Muslim] Yet, this hadith does not restrict the names of Allah to only 99, for in fact there are more than 99 names to be found in the Qur'an and hadith. Another hadith clarifies that there are other names besides these. On the authority of Ibn Mas`ud : The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "There is not a single individual who is afflicted with worry, or grief, and then says, 'O Allah!
A well known hadith concerning the names of Allah is the following: Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah, said, "Allah has ninety-nine names. He who 'ahsaha' [enumerates them, believes in them, ponders their meanings, worships Allah by them and supplicates with them, and acts by them according to one's belief in them] will enter Paradise. He is God, other than whom there is no god, the Compassionate, the Merciful, the King, the Holy, the Source of Peace, the Preserver of Security..."

Some attributes and names of Allah are applied exclusively to Him; for example Allah and Al-Rahmaan. Others use words which can ... be applied to creatures. For example, one of Allah's names is "Al-Raheem", meaning Merciful, and the Prophet is described as merciful using the same word (Raheem) in the Qur'an, [9:128]. However, it is essential to note that although, in cases such as this, the same word may be used to describe both Creator and creation, the meaning of the word is totally different when applied to Allah, the Flawless, the Exalted, for He has told us quite clearly that "there is nothing like unto Him." [Qur'an, 42:11]
