Allah: Teachings

A problem that results from the above hadith -- which seems to be the basis for the posters that are made of the ninety-nine names of Allah -- is that it contains some names which are not considered names of Allah. That is, ignoring this weak hadith, there is no authentic hadith or Quranic verse that offers evidence that those names are from the names of Allah. Since the names of Allah must be based on revelation from Allah (the Quran and Sunnah), if there is no authentic proof for specific names, they cannot be called one of the names of Allah. An example from the above hadith is the name al-Rasheed. There is no Quranic verse or authentic hadith that states this name. Hence, one cannot claim it as a name of Allah.

Nor do Allah's allegations describe a hostile environment. Allah complains both of acts that had a tangible effect on his employment, e.g. transfers to unattractive environments, termination, loss of pay, loss of vacation, changes in an evaluation, and of acts that on their face have nothing to do with his employment, e.g. denials of permits to hold outside events. An actionable hostile environment claim, on the other hand, must target conduct like racial taunting, stereotyping, and intimidation that does not impact an employee's pay or benefits but ... is so persistent and severe that it alters "the conditions of the victim's employment and creates an abusive working environment." Harris v. Forklift Sys., Inc., 510 U.S. 17, 21-23, 126 L. Ed. 2d 295, 114 S. Ct. 367 (1993). Allah does not describe a hostile environment. Consequently only his termination and July transfer claims are actionable under Title VII.

It should be noted at this point that while the masculine pronoun “He” is used in both Arabic and English to denote Allah, He is nonetheless transcendentally beyond any gender. Elucidating this phenomenon, T.J. Winter, a British academic, writes the following:

"Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians and Sabians, whoever believes in "Allah" and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve."

A renowned Muslim scholar named Qadi Iyad Ibn Musa al-Yahsubi is another scholar who agrees that the conjunction wa should be avoided when speaking of Allah and something else together. Yet he makes an exception in the case of the Islamic creed or confession of faith!
